Air America

This movie is a blast. It holds up really well for an early 90's film, mostly because a young Robert Downey Jr and Mel Gibson work so well together. I love the style of those films, so blatantly innocent and one sided all following the same easy to keep track of story arc, with a few comedic suprises thrown in there and some 'spolsions and gun fights.

I enjoyed it way more than I should have, thought the underlying morality 'read between the lines stuff' was a bit stupid, and totally loved the chemistry between Robert Downey Jr and Mel Gibson .. although Roberts eyes were looking damn glassed over for most of the film .. he was definitely into his drugs by this point in time. All in all worth checking out again.

Star Wars: Phantom Menace - The Phantom Cut

Another fan edit, this time of the Phantom Menace. This was actually much more enjoyable than the original movie was. The cutting was less jumpy than the Matrix one and the movie was just so much more enjoyable. A lot of the silly useless enragagingly bad scenes and dialogue were cut out and the movie was just tighter. How this movie ever got made in its original form is beyond me. This one is definitely worth checking out .. apparently there is another fan edit of Episodes 1-3 cut into one 2.5 hour movie that Im really keen to see that one and will keep hunting for it.

The Matrix Dezionized

This is a fan edit of the last two Matrix films combined. Basically he took the two films, cut out all the scenes and has tied them together into one less flashy and over the top movie. Its pretty interesting and I definitely liked what he tried to do, but as with anything like this there are some really sharp jumps between cuts that you know what he was trying to do, but without the ability to go back and film those missing pieces does grate on you a bit. I only got about halfway through but the film had a noticeably different feel than the actual last two movies. It was a lot darker and succinct. Some of the ideas even took on a new meaning so I definitely plan on finishing it up one day, interesting to check out.

Project X

Wow ... compare this to Cant Hardly Wait and how cool I thought all those guys were and how badly I wanted to be at that party in the 90's and they look like little kiddies in the park watching all the big kids get naked, take drugs, drive cars into pools and go totally ape shit next door!

If this is the standard for an awesome freaking party nowadays all I can say is that Im worried for when Bay is a teenager. Holy crap is this party rediculous and over the top but I actually really liked the film and its style, its a really good use of the found footage format. In a funny way it just represents the total anarchy of teen parties to the max and while I totally understand its just a fake party for a film that will likely never happen, its crazy to see it play out.

Fire In The Sky

Alien abduction movie back from 1993, based on a true story. Not too bad for an early 90’s. The thing I found interesting about this film is in real life the 5 guys involved all took lie detector tests and passed. Movie has some great squeamish scenes on the alien ‘probe table’ but is let down a bit with some pretty average acting (reminiscent of a Steven King film) and some draggy bits.

A Dangerous Method

If you're not familiar with David Cronenberg's work then you're missing out.  He's been making unique films about all sorts of crazy subjects for decades.  Just to give a few examples:

The Brood
Videodrome
The Fly
Dead Ringers  (how creepy was THAT!)
Existenz
Eastern Promises

The man is a genius and I always look forward to his movies.. they always have something... special.

A Dangerous Method is a very interesting piece. The story focuses on Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung during the beginnings of psycho therapy and analysis. It’s a very well scripted film , great dialogue and beautifully shot.

The 3 main characters are the biggest strength though – Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender and Keira Knightley all play just engrossing characters. Keira especially plays a neurotic sex & pain obsessed character, very different from her usual beauty role.

Guy is a massive Keria fan so he will definitely enjoy some of the more erotic moments.  :)

I recommend this to anyone who doesn't mind sinking their teeth into a bit of think piece.

The Room

My good mate Macca was playing a practical joke when he recommended this movie.  Macca has a bit of a fetish for terrible movies.  Before this recommendation came Birdemic, which I must say after a few wines was pretty damn hilarious.  Still can't get that intro out of my head, or that board room clapping scene... wont even mention the sprite birds.

But yes Macca, I watched it, mostly in fast forward after the first 10 minutes.  I can't work out what the hell was going on.  Story summary -  There is no story.  The director (Tommy Wiseau) financed this film in order to star in it and have women randomly drop by "his room" to sleep with him.

Amazing voice and sound dubbing though.. which raised the score a little bit.

Birdemic

I genuinely feel sorry for the Director James Nguyen because based on his comments he seemed 100% committed to making a great film with important environmental messages.

LOL

This movie definitely falls into the "So bad it's good" category and I highly recommend watching with a few movie buddies with a LOT of drinks.  Think Troll 2 but funnier.

The audio will have you in stitches amongst many other things.  From start to finish this movie is absolute gold.  Cutting edge special effects help drive home the important message Nguyen is trying to convey.

Macca introduced me to this one and I'm so glad he did.  We keep it for the 2am "should we watch another one?" moment on a movie night to liven up the atmosphere a bit.

I think there is a bright future in store for the entire Birdemic team, epecially Alan Bagh the lead char.  God damn look at his IMDB pic - it just makes it all the more funnier.  I've not seen an actor who even made walking look awkward.  Touche my friend, touche.

1/10 - Real score
9/10 - So bad its good score

P.S - Make sure to drink a lot,  smoke a lot, or whatever your poison is!

Evidence

Evidence starts quite slowly with some very average action although we did get a quick boob shot about 30 seconds in which helped get it on the right track ;)

The middle of this movie was quite good... group of guys go camping, very Blair witch feel and some good scary scenes while their camp is getting stalked by an unknown. This movie ends up going into the land of the WTF at the end though ... it’s an interesting turn but not presented well enough so doesn’t satisfy.

The overuse of camera faults (skipping audio, visual, static, off completely, etc) was a killer as well. The found footage is a fine line between make you feel sick or realistically awesome and these guys didn’t quite get it.   Give it a miss I reckon unless you really need a found footage fix.. but this one doesn't compare to the likes of Rec 1&2, Paranormal activity and Blair Witch..  ooo I better mention Grave Encounters too.. both original and sequel were a top watch.

Apollo 18

Found footage movie collected from old moon landing cameras. This movie had potential but felt like it never got off the ground. A couple of good scares but mostly you’re waiting for it to fire up but it really doesn’t. I would give this one a miss unless you’re bored in which case by all means give it a shot.

The Debt

This was a really great film (Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Tom Wilkison) about some agents who try to take down a Nazi war criminal. There’s some really intense scenes including some great interaction between the agents and their Nazi prisoner while held captive. Also some good twists to compliment and help finish the story. I highly recommend this movie.

The only negative was with the casting. The movie is set both in the past and modern day following the same characters. The older versions of the guys are the wrong way round (in looks) so the whole movie I was thinking they were the other guy. I had a read on IMDB and it seems many people felt the same way.  It’s annoying because if they were playing the right character they are almost perfect.

The Company Men

An interesting film set in the U.S during their recent (and ongoing) economic turmoil. It follows a few characters at different levels in the corporate ladder and their struggle after losing their jobs to find work again. It also shows the other side of the story where with all these people losing their jobs the CEO’s and company execs made record profits from increased stock prices and reduced costs. I wouldn’t call this movie fantastic but definitely an interesting watch with solid production and themes that resonate with Guy's and my own dinner discussions :)

Some big actors help carry this on too such as Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Costner and Chris Cooper.

The Cell

Continuing my exploration of horrible humanity, I thought Id re-watch The Cell and see how it held up. I havent seen this since it came out a decade or so ago and thought it would be shithouse but I was actually suitably satisfied. Its a creepy weird film but the story is kind of clever, the characters give you enough to get involved with them and even the makeup/art work holds up in the face of the special effects falling over in early naughties crappiness. I dont think Ill ever bother with it again but it was better than I expected it to be.

The Artist

This one was the academy award for best picture this year and is a silent black and white film! Yes thats right a silent black and white. Ive heard such good reports from it though I had to give it a shot.

It really is quite an extraordinary film and in my opinion deserves best picture, but its strange in this day and age not to have big soundtracks, dialogue and lots going on. Its brilliantly portrayed and acted, with such a clever script I was giggling often and super impressed but I was also a little bored at times and found my concentration wandering. Maybe thats just a sign of the times that I cant concentrate long enough but I recommend this film a lot. I laughed often and was overall impressed plus its just refreshing to see something different. It got me all inspired and Ive started writing the next script for a short film!

Into The Abyss

Another that messed me up unfortunately .. I didnt quite know what I was getting myself into with this as I thought it was a documentary about the death penalty in America which I was curious about.

Its directed by Werner Herzog who is a really famous documentary filmmaker who has done some others Ive seen. What this film actually is though is a look at the impact of a triple murder committed by two 18 year olds on themselves, their families and the victims families. It shows real police evidence footage which is really graphic, but, the thing that shocked me the most was when they interview the guy on death row the week before he is killed. The things he says just show such a warped and institutionalised frame of view its sickening, let alone what he did and denies doing. So once again, this film was captivating but also troubling and only watch it if your happy to mope for a few more weeks about how disgusting people can be.

Hunger

This movie is truly disturbing. Not in a horror or gore sense, but in a way Ive never really seen done in a film before. It made me feel utter contempt for some of the acts mankind are capable of doing as I sat in awe of the skill in film-making, shot composition and acting.

Its a movie about the hunger strikes of the IRA in northern Ireland in the 80's filmed by Steve McQueen who Ive heard a lot of buzz about (and rightly so) and starring the man of the moment Michael Fassbender who has grown even closer to becoming the new Daniel Day Lewis for me after his turn as the lead character in this film. He does a bit of a Christian Bale and starves himself in real life to show how weak and disgusting the actual men would have looked in the 80's and at one point he is bent over and his rib cage is sticking out from him like a weird breast or something and he is playing with it. It was terrifying.

This movie is utterly amazing but is also truly horrifying so I only recommend watching it when you can handle having thoughts running rampant in your head for a few weeks about how evil people can be, wondering why humans do what they do and what it must feel like to have such conviction to your cause that you will starve yourself and others to make a point to another countries government.

Silent House

First of all this movie should have been called CLEAVAGE HOUSE.

The most notable thing about this film is that it’s made to look like one continuous camera shot – e.g not edited. It does this quite cleverly by cutting at times when the camera is panning around over walls or through doors etc. It’s done well and if you’re not looking for it you won’t notice. This technique draws you into the movie straight away, kind of like found footage handy cam stuff, except this was absolutely professional A-grade camera work. It also made the 85 minutes fly by in an intense rush.

The story itself was a bit of the same old and overall not very satisfying.. it may have been if I was paying attention but was too distracted by Olsen's cleavage.  I wouldn’t recommend seeing this movie if it wasn’t for the camera work above. It’s worth sitting through just to see how cleverly it’s done, get some ideas etc. It’s not terrible though and you will get a few good scares and enjoy the ride a little.

Flowers of War

This was a really amazing film from China with Christian Bale as the lead role. It’s set in World War 2 during the Japanese taking of Nankine. The story itself is quite beautiful but what I found amazing was the film making. It was a huge mix of Chinese and Japanese style film making with slow elegant shots, beautifully detailed shots and also the trademark over-the-top blood – although in this movie done quite tastefully. I can’t recommend this film enough for something different and really beautiful.

Man On A Ledge

Quite a big cast here.. Sam Worthington, Ed Harris, Ed Burn and lots of familiar faces. Go into this movie without reading the premise.. it’s quite a clever plot and satisfying to watch. Although a bit unrealistic at times, just sit back and enjoy without analysing it too much :)

The Thing (2011)

If you haven’t seen John Carpenters original “The Thing” then this will work in your favour when watching this modern prequel. When you take on making a successor to such a brilliant and classic original then you’re either James Cameron or bound for failure... and obviously this one was not directed by James Cameron.

The best element on the original was the tension built in knowing who was infected and who wasn’t. The new film tried to replicate this but kind of felt like it was just going through the motions.

The new movie kept true to the monster effects of the original which are now quite dated and a bit silly, using CGI instead to quite good use and to some really good detail.

Overall there was no way this movie could live up to expectations, doomed to fail... but it was a decent attempt at least and worth a watch.

Chronicle

Full Hollywood production meets the found footage genre.

This one is done quite well with minimal shaky cam and plenty of well written excuses for some elegant camera work. Also some very impressive special effects which you don’t usually see much of in the found footage stuff.

I didn’t really know what this one was about before I watched it and I think that made it more enjoyable so won’t say what it’s about. It’s a decent flick though, well worth a watch. It felt close to greatness but never actually quite got there.
